Hargeisa – As a follow-up to the visit by Secretary General of the Association of Arab Universities Dr. Sultan Abu Orabi Al Adwan earlier this year to the Republic of Somaliland, and based on the membership applications submitted by Amoud University in Burma City and Yaro University to join the Association of Arab Universities, a membership examination committee was formed, chaired by the Secretary General of the Association of Arab Universities Dr. Sultan Abu Orabi and including as its members President of Mogadishu University Dr. Ali Al Sheikh and former President of Middle East University Dr. Sultan Abu Orabi Dr. Maher Saleem. The committee examined these universities in terms of the academic qualifications of the faculty members, the ratio of faculty to students, and the facilities including teaching halls and laboratories of faculties and departments, libraries, student spaces and sports courts as well as the system for acceptance and registration adopted at each university and the general conditions for acceptance of students in the various specializations. The committee recommended the acceptance of two universities as members, and the recommendations were submitted to the Association’s General Conference to proceed with the official procedures and make a final decision.

The Association’s delegation, accompanied by the Association’s Director of Media and Public Relations Mr. Waheeb Karajeh, also met with a number of ministers and academic officials in Somaliland.

In a related context, Dr. Abu Orabi announced visits to universities in Somaliland over the next few months to complete the membership examination procedures for Gollis and Nugaal Universities after fulfilling their membership conditions.

The Association’s delegation visited Al Najah University in Yaro City and met with its administrative officials. Dr. Abu Orabi expressed his gratitude to the Somali universities for their prompt response and for working continuously to join the Association as members, as they constitute an important part of the Arab academic institutions which should be engaged in all academic activities, international conferences and official events regularly organized by the Association. This will enable the universities to benefit from relations and communication channels with Arab and international institutions and organizations.
