The Association of Arab Universities and Shanghai Ranking Organize a Webinar on Evaluating the Performance of Universities and Academic Disciplines in the Arab Region

The Association of Arab Universities, in collaboration with Shanghai Ranking, organized a specialized virtual webinar entitled:
“Evaluating the Performance of Universities and Academic Disciplines in the Arab Region,” with the participation of a wide range of representatives from Arab universities and global ranking experts.
The webinar commenced with a welcoming address delivered by H.E. Prof. Amr Ezzat Salama, Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities, who emphasized the importance of this strategic partnership with Shanghai Ranking and its role in supporting Arab universities in their pursuit of academic excellence and in strengthening their presence in global rankings.
Dr. Anas Al-Soud, Executive Director of the Association, also delivered remarks highlighting the significance of global university rankings in measuring the quality of academic and research performance, and in enabling universities to develop their institutional strategies based on precise and reliable indicators.
The webinar featured distinguished experts from Shanghai Ranking representing the Chinese side, who delivered a comprehensive presentation on ranking methodologies and evaluation mechanisms, drawing on the latest global data and indicators. The session addressed the following key themes:
  • An overview of the ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities) methodology and how university performance is measured, particularly in terms of research output, quality of education, and academic impact.
  • An analysis of the performance of Arab universities within the ranking, highlighting key challenges and opportunities for improving their global standing.
  • A review of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) and the evaluation criteria used to assess disciplines, including research output, publications, and citation impact.
  • A practical demonstration of tracking tools such as ARWU Tracker and GRAS Tracker, and their role in supporting strategic planning and data-driven decision-making.
  • The presentation of data-driven insights aimed at helping universities enhance their performance and strengthen their competitiveness in global rankings.
The webinar witnessed strong engagement from participants, with numerous questions focusing on ways to improve academic and research performance, and on how to effectively utilize ranking criteria in shaping institutional policies and strategies.
This webinar comes as part of the Association of Arab Universities’ ongoing efforts to foster international collaboration, support member universities in achieving excellence, and enhance the quality of their educational and research outcomes in line with global best practices and standards.
